As home and business owners are becoming concerned over heating and cooling costs with their open attics or maybe converting of them into a living space and sealing it up. You may taking away a bat(s) summer home.

Maybe you want to close up that barn, garage, or overhead space? In fact this can be any vacant overhead space, your should first check for bats. Over time your attic or garage may have become a home to a colony of bats. Years of your attic, or garage being left open as an empty space may have attracted bats making your attic or garage their summer home.

In some attics it may even be a winter home for bats if warm enough. These spaces are ideal for summer time bat roosts, hot and out-of-the-way and large enough to support bats. So before you close up that attic, garage or vacant space you should check for bats.

What Should I do if we have bats?

If possible put any work off until after November when bats leave their summer time roost for caves where they spend the winter in hibernation. You should complete the work prior to April when bats start returning to their summer roost again.

What If work must be done during the summer months when bats are present?

You should have a qualified person or company remove the bats. The killing of bats is no longer allowed so all caution should be taken in removing bats safely and unharmed. Prior to or during work you should consider an alternate place for the bats to go. Having a bat house installed is one alternative. This will increase your chances of keep the bats in your area. Loosing the bats will cause your night-time insect population to increase as bats will no longer be around to feed on them.
