White-Breasted Nuthatch

White-Breasted Nuthatch have become a common feature in our back yard birds, they have become so common that I am able to get right up close. At times I have come eye to eye as seen in some of these pictures. There are about 5 or so who make home in our backyard, they visit the feeder on a daily bases and also visit our in window feeder.

White-Breasted Nuthatch Habits

White-Breasted Nuthatch’s are common throughout North America and Southern Canada, usually found in pairs or alone. Their habitat consists of open woodland, or mature forest and of course you back yard where they frequently will visit your feeder. Their White-breasted Nuthatch like to feast on sunflower seeds, we use wild bird seed mixture, also you can use peanut butter mix, suet and berries if available. In the wild common food is insect and spiders, this is mostly during the summer month when they are abundant. After finding their food they will either consume it right away or they may also store it for the future.

Seen creeping down at times headfirst from tree truck, bird feeder at our home our window sill looking for insect and other food. At our window feeder we commonly see them creeping down our window sill into our window feeder.

White-Breasted Nuthatch Characteristics

Features of the White-Breasted Nuthatch are the male has glossy black forehead and crown, with a blue gray back. Its under parts are white, this completing the features of the male. The female features and the young are general paler with a gray crown and nape. (Nape is the back of one’s neck in this case the female and young)
