The Audubon McLane Center Installs a Bat House

The Audubon’s Susan N. McLane Center located on Silk Farm Road, Concord New Hampshire now has a new bat house, donated by P&S Country Crafts L.L.C. located in Bristol NH. The bat house is located over the front entrance way to the center, as you look up you will see the black bat box.

The McLane Center was named after the late senator Susan McLane who was a long time Audubon member and trustee and served on the board for several years.

This bat house is designed to accommodate up to 300 bats, hoping to attract the now endangered little brown bat and big brown bat due to White-nose Syndrome. By putting up a bat house you are giving bats a chance to start new colonies and are also giving them an alternate home during the summer months. As people go green by making their homes and barns more energy efficient they also are sealing bats out of the spaces they once called home during those months. Bat houses give bats an alternative place to go, and let’s not forget a single little brown bat can consume up to 1000 mosquitoes a night which makes it the ultimate mosquito killing machine.

The McLane center offers a nature center gift shop where you can purchase a bat house by P&S Country Crafts. All bat houses are locally made in Bristol NH by us. All wood used to build our bat houses is from trees that were damaged from past storms, diseased or posed a safety issue. No trees are cut just to build a bat house.

The McLane Center nature gift shop also offers nature books, locally made items, bird houses which P&S Country Crafts also provides, bird feeders, bird food, clothing, nature gear and much more. Open from 12:00pm to 5:00pm Tuesday thru Friday.

The Center also offers nature trails, picnic areas for family outings, and more. It is free to the public, but donations are excepted at the center. The McLane Center is open Monday thru Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm. The sanctuary trails are open 7 days a week from dawn to dusk , so bring your family for a nature outing and check out our bat house.
