As you may have heard White-nose Syndrome has been found in 14 states, well now you can add two more states to the list making Indiana number 15 and North Carolina the 16th state to have White-nose Syndrome.
Indiana has confirmed the present of WNS the beginning of February. With this discovery of WNS now moving west will be putting a even bigger strain on the bat population and for another possibly bleak winter for bat colonies.
North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission and the U.S. Wildlife serviced confirming White-nose Syndrome is now present in North Carolina. They confirm that six bats tested positive for WNS, five from one abandoned mine located in Avery County. The sixth bat found with WNS came from a cave located in the Grandfather Mountain State Park.
Within five years White-nose Syndrome has now spread to 16 states and Canada and the killing of tens of thousands bats and the effecting of countless more. WNS currently effects only hibernating bats which makes half of all bat species residing in North America . White-nose Syndrome right now is confined to just six species of bats but there is a fear this may spread to other types of bats in the future.
How much more damage has been done to the bat population will be a wait and see as winter comes to an end and more information comes about.
