Stated in a news release on May 17, 2025 the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service goes on the offense against White-nose Syndrome. This is in response to the fact that WNS has now been reported in 18 states and 4 Canadian Providences. WNS has reportedly killed over a 1 million bats since first discovered near Albany NY in 2006 and effecting entire eco-systems in both the United States and Canada.
Ken Salazar the U.S. Secretary of the Interior , states “we have learned a lot in the past few years about WNS but there is much more work to be done.” Mr. Salazar also comments “Having spread to 18 states and four Canadian provinces, white-nose syndrome threatens far-reaching ecological and economic impacts. ”
The national plan will provide a road map for both federal, state and tribal agencies to include the scientific community to follow. It will also encourage the sharing of information and resources to help stream line and efficiently address the WNS threat.
