Nova Scotia has become the fourth Canadian Province to confirm White-nose Syndrome in their Little Brown Bat population.
The diagnosis was confirmed in April by the Canadian Co-Operative Wildlife Health Centre, located in Prince Edward Island. Charlie Parker, the Minister of Natural Resources states there is no health risk to the public, but is asking people to stay out of all caves and old mines that have become home to the bat population.
White-nose Syndrome was first confirmed in New York State in 2006, since then has spread across the northeastern United States and into Canada. Within two years of being found in New York two Canadian Provinces had discovered White-nose Syndrome Ontario and Quebec. In March of 2011 New Brunswick became the 3rd Canadian Province to confirm White-nose Syndrome in its bat population.
